Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
